SEO Glossary – SEO Terms Explained

Before delving into Search Engine Optimisation, you need to understand some basic SEO terms. So here is a list of a few terms you will come across.

301 Redirect

This is a permanent redirect that informs search engines that the page you are trying to access has changed it’s address permanently. Users that are trying to access or have bookmarked the old address will be automatically redirected to the new one.

Alt Tag

This is the description of an image on your website. When an image on your website can’t be loaded for some reason then this is the description that gets displayed. Perfect for telling Google what your image is about.

Anchor Text

The Clickable text in a hyperlink. This text helps search engines understand and describe what the destination page is about.


A link placed on another site that points back to your website. A critical factor in search engine optimisation as it helps Search Engines determine the importance and value of your content.

Canonical Tag

HTML link element that lets webmasters to inform search engines about some duplicate content pages they’ve created.


Simply put, the unique web address of your website. (e.g You can grab yourself a new domain from GoDaddy.

Do-follow & No-Follow Links

Do follow links are links that Search Engine will crawl whereas a No follow link tells search engines not to crawl them or count them as votes of quality.

Duplicate Content

Separate webpages that have the blocks or chunks of the same content. A no no from Google.

H1 Tag

A HTML tag that indicates a heading on a website. A H1 tag is the main heading of your webpage and considered important.


Keywords are crucial as they are the link between search queries on search engines and the content that you provide that returns for these queries.

Meta Descriptions

A brief description of the contents of a page that is displayed on search engine results pages below the page title.


On Page SEO is the process of optimizing your website for search. It can include structural changes, revising code (such as HTML tags) and content optimization (placing researched keywords in the right place).


Off-Page SEO work is done outside of the website. The main focus of this is to promote the website via Link Acquisition/building.


Also known as Search Engine Results Page. These are pages of results for any given search query on Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.


A Sitemap is a map of your website that shows all your URLs. It informs search engines about the content of your website.


A robots.txt file tells search engine crawlers which pages on your website that they can crawl.

Title Tags

The Title of the webpage that is displayed on search engine results pages. This is meant to be an accurate and concise description of a page’s content.
