Some herbal teas have naturally calming sedative effects that can help alleviate sleep disorders such as insomnia and ensure higher sleep quality. We have rounded up a list of some of the best night time teas that can help you relax and fall asleep faster.

Chamomile Tea

The most well known bedtime tea. Due to it’s calming nature, it is perfect to have just before bedtime. Chamomile tea has been used across the world for centuries to treat insomnia, reduce stress and anxiety.

Made from the flowers of a chamomile plant, it contains an antioxidant called apigenin, which may help initiate sleep. Apigenin binds to specific receptors in your brain that may decrease anxiety and initiate sleep.

Valerian Root Tea

The Valerian root has also been used for centuries to tear insomnia and headaches. Often called a magic sleep potion and according to some reports is the number one non-prescription sedative in Europe.

Valerian root tea is made from the roots of the Valeriana officinialis plant that is native to Asia and Europe.

Passionflower Tea

There are about 500 known species of passionflower, with some having medicinal benefits. For example, Passiflora incarnata may help treat anxiety and insomnia.

It has been known to calm your mind and to boost the level of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in your brain. Some species of the plant can be used to soothe and treat stomach problems.

Lemon Balm Tea

Lemon balm is a perennial herb from the mint family which can be used to make medicinal products.

It is commonly used for digestive problems, including upset stomach, bloating, intestinal gas (flatulence), vomiting, and colic; for pain, including menstrual cramps, headache and toothache; and for mental disorders, including hysteria and melancholia.

Due to it’s calming effects, people take it for anxiety, sleep problems, and restlessness.

Lavender Tea

Lavender tea is best known for it’s relaxing aroma, which will help in making you fall asleep. In the ancient Greek and Roman times, the rich would add lavender to their baths to help them relax.

Made from the small purple buds of the flowering plant it’s grown worldwide.

Magnolia Bark Tea

Magnolia Bark Tea is known for its anti-anxiety and sedative effects. Made mostly from the bark, it has been used traditionally by the Chinese to relieve stress among other ailments.
